“Viking”

A side-dragger commercial fishing boat used primarily for inshore fishing,”Viking was built in 1929 at the Casey Boatbuilding Company in Fairhaven… She is one of the last of a breed of wooden boats built when fish were plentiful and commercial fishing was a year-round industry.”        – Mark Alan Lovewell, Vineyard Gazette, Nov. 29, 2012

Viking, sold in late 2012, was fished for three generations by the Coutinho family, and is a significant part of the Vineyard’s fishing history. Captain Craig Coutinho has retired after fifty years on the sea.

Built in 1929, Menemsha’s Little Lady is a 42-foot side-dragger commercial fishing boat long used for classic inshore fishing.

Nowadays inshore fish have been depleted, and bigger boats steam out for bigger hauls of fish. Little Lady, now a bona fide antique, is beautifully preserved by the third generation of the Jason family of Chilmark. —Holly Nadler, Vineyard Gazette

“Flounder”

Flounder is the wooden tender to Ayuthia who takes her name from a city in Thailand where she was built. These days, Ayuthia splits her time between Hope Town in the Abacos—where she’s chartered inwinter—and Martha’s Vineyard where her owner, Tom Grew, charters her in  summers. Ayuthia is a gaff-rigged ketch dating to the 1930s; she was built in what was called Siam (now Thailand) where her first owner had a teak plantation. “As a result”, says Jay Wilbur,” the boat is ‘all teak, and the best teak’. Even the hull and keel.”

“When and If”

"When and If"

“When and If”

When and If is a classic John G. Alden designed schooner, built by FF Pendleton in Wiscasset, Maine for then Colonel and Mrs. George S. Patton. She was launched in 1939 and the Pattons planned to sail her around the world “when and if” Patton returned from the war that he saw looming in Europe. Unfortunately, Patton – by then a famous General – was killed in a freak auto accident shortly after the end of the war.

In 1990 she broke loose from her mooring during a November gale and landed on the rocks in Manchester By The Sea, Massachusetts. Her insurers declared her a total loss … She was placed aboard a barge and brought to the renowned Gannon & Benjamin Boatyard of Martha’s Vineyard. Vineyard Haven Harbor has long been known as a haven for wooden schooners and boats, and the island had the craftsmen and skilled shipbuilders to repair her. She remained in the boatyard for two years and was relaunched in June of 1994 to much joy in the classic yacht and the sailing world.
