“Mabel”

Mabel is a 28 ft. ketch-rigged open boat, reminiscent of a 19th century fishing craft called the Nomans Land boat. Mabel was designed by Vineyard student Myles Thurlow under the tutelage of acclaimed wooden boat designer Nat Benjamin at Gannon and Benjamin Marine Railway. In 2003, she made her maiden voyage from Martha’s Vineyard to New York City and up the Hudson River to participate in the Clearwater Hudson River Revival. She is the flagship of the Vineyard Voyagers fleet.

Viking, sold in late 2012, was fished for three generations by the Coutinho family, and is a significant part of the Vineyard’s fishing history. Captain Craig Coutinho has retired after fifty years on the sea.

Sincerity was designed by the renowned Baglietto yard of Varazze, Italy—a fast and comfortable cruising boat—which is apparent in her lines. “Little Lady”

Built in 1929, Menemsha’s Little Lady is a 42-foot side-dragger commercial fishing boat long used for classic inshore fishing.

Nowadays inshore fish have been depleted, and bigger boats steam out for bigger hauls of fish. Little Lady, now a bona fide antique, is beautifully preserved by the third generation of the Jason family of Chilmark. —Holly Nadler, Vineyard Gazette
