Since the early 19th century, the Steamship Authority’s ferries have served the island. Standing out from the rest of the fleet is the beloved Islander. Though retired, she still holds a special place for many. She was the only ferry to venture out when the weather was fierce. Photographer Jeffrey Serusa has a particular affinity for the Islander, and it shows in his magnificent photographs of her in all forms of weather. His images of the Islander capture the tenacious durability of this vessel through turbulent seas, its impressive history withstanding the test of more than five decades of service on Vineyard Sound.
